Lantern of Misperceived Threat
On patrol beneath the ornamental lighthouse of Yerba Buena Island, the covenant of vigilance was tested. My trainer instructed me to shine my light upon the rocks, to guard against intruders who might climb from the sea.
I obeyed, and in an instant a hundred golden eyes blazed back at me. Horror rose, and my hand went instinctively to my weapon—yet restraint held it in the holster. In that moment, the night seemed invaded, the island under siege.
But laughter broke the tension. My trainer, doubled over, knew the truth. He urged me to look again, not with fear but with patience. And so I did. The golden eyes resolved into fifty sea lions, resting in covenant with the rocks, their watch no intrusion but a chorus of nature.
Testimony
- Fear transformed: what seemed invasion was only life at rest.
- Restraint honored: vigilance without escalation, weapon untouched.
- Vision corrected: patience revealed truth where panic saw threat.
- Humor consecrated: laughter turned horror into parable.
Lantern of Misperceived Threat: Authority must shine its light, but covenant teaches that not every gleam is danger. Sometimes the invasion is only sea lions, guardians of the rocks, reminding us that vigilance must be tempered by discernment.
