The Knight Who Flew, and Flies Still
I once wore the Black Knight
upon my shoulder,
and the sky bore witness.
Today,
others wear it still—
pilots,
crew,
guardians of the sea and air.
The emblem has not faded;
it has flown forward.
The knight is no relic.
He is a living sentinel.
His plume
streams behind helicopters
that still rise.
His shield
guards missions
that still matter.
And his spirit—
quiet,
disciplined,
resolute—
still marks those who serve.
To the current Black Knights
of HSC-4:
you carry more than a patch.
You carry a legacy.
You fly with the prayers
of those who flew
before you.
Glossary Lantern: Legacy
- Definition: The enduring impact of one’s service, values, and witness passed to future bearers.
- Usage in The Ordinary Path: Legacy is the knight’s plume carried by the wind of time, still visible in today’s flight.
- Apropos: Legacy is not what we leave behind—it is what others carry forward.
Field Sermon: To Those Who Fly Now
Black Knights of today,
hear this:
You are not alone
in the sky.
You fly with the memory
of those who once rose,
and the hope of those
who will rise.
Your missions may differ.
Your aircraft may evolve.
But the spirit—
the knight’s quiet vow—
remains unchanged.
Fly with honor.
Fly with mercy.
Fly knowing
that your emblem is a lantern
lit decades ago,
still burning bright.
And when you land,
know this:
You are part of a lineage
of airborne witness.
You are the living testimony of
the Black Knight.

If this offering stirred something in you—
a memory,
a question,
a flicker of light—
you are welcome to share
your reflection below.
No need for eloquence.
No need for certainty.
Just a lantern,
gently placed.
